I wish everyone a Happy New Year from my Bellaire, Michigan studio. Along with spending my winter downhill and cross country skiing on the hills near my home, I'm busy creating more paintings to have ready for the 2012 gallery season. The woods of northern Michigan provide me with as much inspiration in the winter as they do during the summer. Here's one painting that captures this magical time of year.

My painting of the statue of Father Marquette in Marquette Park on Mackinac Island was selected as the image for the 2008 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival Poster.

The 16x20 inch posters are available for $12 through the Cycling Salamander Gallery in Charlevoix, MI and at Lilacs and Lace and Victorian Summer located on Mackinac Island. These galleries are open seasonally. Please email me if you're interested in purchasing a poster during the off season.

Afternoon Respite

On the grounds of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island there are beautiful gardens adjacent to a croquet court. Play a game of croquet, enjoy the flowers and then if needed, take an afternoon respite on one of the wooded benches nestled among the flowers.

Betty Bea Washburn taught me the paint strokes that create the wispy branches of a gnarly white pine. She taught me perseverance while working with clay, and she taught me about vanishing points and proportions. She was my Middle School Art teacher. Betty Bea still is everyone's favorite teacher.
